Tamil Nadu Assembly Hung Verdict: TVK Claims Government Formation Amid Majority Dispute
Tamil Nadu faces a hung assembly after TVK wins 108 seats in the 234-member House, challenging DMK and AIADMK dominance. Vijay claims majority support with 118 MLAs including CPI, CPI(M), and Congress backing, while the Governor disputes the count amid missing alliance confirmations, triggering political uncertainty ahead of a possible May 9 government formation.
In the elections held on April 23, TVK emerged as the single largest party by securing 108 seats in the 234-member Legislative Assembly. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam secured 59 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won 47 seats, resulting in a hung verdict that disrupted the established political balance in the state.
Party leader Vijay formally submitted his claim to Governor Rajendra Arlekar on May 6, asserting majority support based on the backing of 118 Members of the Legislative Assembly. This claim included support letters from the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), along with five legislators from the Indian National Congress, who are currently reported to be in Hyderabad for security reasons.
However, the Governor’s office has raised questions over the validity of the claimed majority, stating that the confirmed count stands at 116 in the absence of formal letters from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the Indian Union Muslim League. Additional uncertainty surrounds the four seats held by Pattali Makkal Katchi and one disputed Member of the Assembly from the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, further intensifying the political uncertainty.
With competing claims over numerical strength, administrative scrutiny over support letters, and shifting alignments among smaller parties, the situation remains unresolved. The possibility of a swearing-in ceremony as early as May 9 has heightened political tensions across the state.
The unfolding developments mark a critical moment in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, as competing blocs attempt to establish legitimacy in a tightly contested and unprecedented hung assembly scenario.
